What Your Funeral Director Wants You to Know About Funeral Planning: Part 2

memorial serviceIn the first post of this series, we explained some things your funeral director would want you to know about planning a funeral for a loved one. Funeral planning is not an easy thing, so we have come up with some facts that really will help you get through this tough time. Here we continue our list that will hopefully help you make all your funeral arrangements with ease.

  • A protective casket isn’t a good idea
Some mourners believe a protective casket is the way to go simply because it will protect the body from outside elements once buried. However, since these caskets come with a vacuum sealed protective gasket, this can lead to a build up of gases from the body that can actually cause the casket to explode. Don’t worry about the protective barrier and just purchase a regular casket.
  • Consider a veteran memorial service
If your loved one was honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed forces, consider having a special memorial service for them complete with the honor guard and a burial flag. They may also be able to benefit from the Veteran’s Affairs Association, which can offer financial compensation that can help with the overall costs of the funeral. For example, for non-service related deaths, the maximum VA burial allowance ranges from $300 to $700, depending on if the veteran was hospitalized with the VA at the time of death.
  • It is okay to be wary of having an open casket
Having an open casket is hard because you don’t want your last visual of your loved one to be at their funeral. So, don’t feel that you have to have this option at the calling hours, and only do what is comfortable for you and your family.
  • We may ask for photographs to help prepare the body
Our job is to make the deceased look as they did when they were alive, so we may ask for a photograph of them to make our jobs a bit easier. This photo should be as recent as possible.

Remember, your funeral director is here to help you with this difficult time. This is a celebration of your loved one’s life, and we will we will be there every step of the way.
